Infamous, or Un-famous? The work of our local community foundations

If I told you there was a small network of people, working under the radar in our own community, and directing funds to and from different groups and individuals, you might assume that a scandal would someday hit the headlines and become infamous in our area. But what if I told you that this group is doing something worth celebrating—connecting people with resources with people doing effective work and making a positive impact in our community? They’re just un-famous and not very well known… You’d be encouraged and surprised, right?

Before I began working as the Director of Development at Friendship Village, I couldn’t have told you more than the bare minimum about the work being done by community foundations. Perhaps the same is true for you.

The role that community foundations play is similar to that of a matchmaker. They help people who want to make a difference in our community through their generosity to find and fund people who are doing the kind of work that is close to the heart of the donor. As I searched through the websites of our local foundations, I was moved to see how many local families have set up funds so that their financial resources can be directed to organizations that are making the Cedar Valley a better place to live. As I saw the list of organizations which we can all support, my eyes were opened to all the groups who have a vision to make an impact and are just looking for the right partners to move their mission forward.

On October 19, from 1:30 to 2:30, you’ll have an opportunity to learn more at a seminar hosted by the Friendship Village Foundation. “Why Community Foundations Matter: Understanding how they work and the impact they’re having in the Cedar Valley.”  Erin Tink, Executive Director of the Waterloo Community Foundation and Paula Hill, Charitable Advisor at the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa will be present to share how community foundations offer unique benefits to donors, organizations, and the community, including our own community at Friendship Village and Landmark Commons. Come to the Village Terrace Event Center and be encouraged and uplifted to hear real stories of generosity and impact!
